Why are the Oriental Orthodox so Hypocritical about Nationalism?

From the title to the content of the post,  I have my doubts even pointing out a basic fact like that is worth it.  The tone seems a bit hyperbolic.

    History of Byzantium Podcast

    1) I was thinking more along the lines of Epic poetry, the greatest and most famous is the "Shahnameh" (book of kings)  by Ferdowsi, who was a sassanid hold out... also early post  Islamic invasion people like Rudiki who also may have been hold outs. As for the theology,  the Zoroastrianism we...

    History of Byzantium Podcast

If you  want any trails to sources on specific topics , or have a specific question on anything that you want a lead to or debate any historical (non theological) topic , ask on this thread or shoot me a PM I might be able to oblige.  I'm not sure if the Sassanid/ Persian history/ poetry /...

    Favorite Christian Books

The Fantastic Four 48-51 the Galactus trilogy plus postscript by American non Christian pulp artists Jack Kirby and Stan Lee.  No heavy handed moralizing or spirtualizing, good story telling,  great pulp art and fiction, no desire to run out in the desert,  no desire to drink shiraz and play...

    Quiz: Masterpiece or forgery?

I thought the last painting was a "trick question", so I missed it as  well 9/10 because of that.

    The Last Jedi

If I remember correctly that was a thing that me and my friends kind of had a "what the heck" moment to.  The point is,  it's a kind of minor flaw that you shrug your shoulders to and move on.  But it's a flaw that's categorically  different and a little less ignorable than bombs dropping in...

    The Last Jedi

I'm going to nit pick you on this.  The mistake of the "par sec" ought probably  be compared more to the mistake of gravity bombs in space in the last Jedi.  That mistake is at best a technical minor error,  and one is usually more in the wrong for pointing such things out. The light speed...

    The Last Jedi

I took a bunch of kids to see it at the Imax.  They all liked it a lot.  I probably missed 15 min of the movie taking kids out of the theater for bathroom breaks. Some of those scenes were pretty thrilling and spectacular to look at,  like the fleet getting blown up,  the throne room,  and...

    "War on Christmas"

Centuries?  I think you mean decades. Anywho, at OP: "War on Xmas" or  all these "wars" on much of anything is a hyperbolic rabble rousing tactic.  Don't take the bait. That stated, if what you said is true,  Google deserves to be mocked for using the phrase "global December festivities" on...

Do you have to be religious/devout?

Should you be middling to friends and family or devote? Can you have a moderate stance on genocide?  If those questions seem absurd,  that's the your missing.  However misplaced , strong, or weak ones devotion may be,  devotion is a virtue.  A man displaying none in anything isn't going to get...

What video games are everyone playing lately?

There's a thread innocuous asking about video games,  and you meta out and went all Carrie Nation  on it. I hardly play video games, I only opened this thread because I saw you post  in it, and I bet myself your post was people feeling the wrath and hell fire of Porterthustra's pet peeves. I...

What video games are everyone playing lately?

If you were some 80 year old cat lady you might get a pass, but C'mon man,  don't be that guy.    Nobody likes a vegan  pacifist teetoteler busybody primitivist ... puritan. Then again: every party needs a pooper that's why we invited you.

Taking the Mass out of Christmas?

I always thought that the common example of a nominal Christian was one who attended Church service on only Christmas and Easter.  Is that only a liturgical Christian cliche?  Someone recently told me most Protestants cancel services on Sunday if Christmas should happen to fall on that day.  I...

    "Organic" liturgical development

Hopefully I'm connected to your point,  and I'm trying really hard not to make a response that isn't too meandering,  ponderous,  or bloviated.  If this is just specifically about liturgy disregard this post,  I don't think I can give a very good answer.  But if you're talking about something...

    What's everyone listening to?

Great song,  great band (or their first three albums at least)

    What's everyone listening to?

For the velvet underground, i like the one that omits the bridge, which I think was the standard version for a very long time.  The first time I heard the bridge was the cowboy junkie version.  It works well in that version,  and can work with reinterpretations of the song, it doesn't work...

    What's everyone listening to?

It's not like "sweet Jane" is anywhere near the top 10 of velvet underground songs,  but that extended version with the bridge that has lyrics about "roses" does not work as good as the edited version that existed for multiple decades.  I'm not a fan that that has become the standard version...
