Metropolitan Anthony (Khrapovitsky) explaining some lacunas in synoptic Gospels

It is well known that the Gospel of John completes and clarifies several gaps in the three synoptic Gospels. Metr. Anthony offers an explanation in his paper Christ the Savior and the Judean Revolution published in 1922 (Митрополит Антоний Храповицкий, Христос Спаситель и еврейская революция...

Why would one broadcast the fact of being treated "minister of Satan"?

You accuse Metropolitan Vitaly of blasphemy. What does it consist in? He lays out the facts: three times the head of the church pointed out to Metropolitan Sergius that he could not do what he did, and he did it anyway and did not even reply to any of the three letters. Though at least one of...

Why would one broadcast the fact of being treated "minister of Satan"?

Your reproaches to the hierarchs of the Russian Orthodox Church are not new. In 1932 they were voiced by Metropolitan Sergius (Stragorodsky) himself. He was answered by Metr. Anthony (Khrapovitsky) in a letter of May 6, 1933; I produce below an excerpt from this letter: "You condemn the...

Curzon's note and the question of apostolic succession in the church

The obligation is not to keep the lists, but to follow the rules: cheirotonia + prayer. As explained before, the cheirotonia points to the one whom the God's work will pour the grace on. You are saying that St Hyppolitus invented an utterly false ecclesiology... Look into St Basil's letter...

Why would one broadcast the fact of being treated "minister of Satan"?

In my post I cited the opinion of Metropolitan Anthony (Bloom) on the differences between the ROCOR and the ROC-MP as expressed in the early 1990s. In 1998, Metropolitan Vitaly gave a more substantial answer to this question in an interview to Canadian radio. Here is a transcript of the relevant...

Why would one broadcast the fact of being treated "minister of Satan"?

I think it's something stronger than just being suspicious. I believe, Metr. Vitaly's attitude was based not on suspicions, but mostly on the knowledge of some factual information.

Why would one broadcast the fact of being treated "minister of Satan"?

Yes, and the distance was even greater than one might suggest basing on the opinion of Mitr. Anthony (Bloom). I am going to reproduce Mitr. Vitaly's answer to the same question in the next comment.

Curzon's note and the question of apostolic succession in the church

I agree; Rakovsky also pointed to the apostolic succession lineage in his post: Bizzlebin objects that there are gaps in the lineage: The point is, today we have some periods, in the history in general and in the history of the church in particular, that are covered very scarcely. The few...

Curzon's note and the question of apostolic succession in the church

Obviously, what a bishop transfers to a successor in apostolic succession is not his own position or his see, but the privilege of receiving the grace. The metaphor of lighting lamps from one another used by Gregory Palamas (cited by Gloria Tibi Trinitas) is very helpful to understand it.

Curzon's note and the question of apostolic succession in the church

Thank you for this reference, it is the explicit idea of apostolic succession. Bizzlebin objects: But it is obvious from the citation of St Hyppolitus of Rome I gave above in this thread that it is not the ordaining bishop who transmits the Holy Spirit to the newly ordained one; the...

Why would one broadcast the fact of being treated "minister of Satan"?

While reading conversations of Metropolitan Anthony (Bloom) of Sourozh (Митрополит Антоний Сурожский (Блум), Дом божий, Москва, Гранат, 2018), I discovered interesting details about his acquaintance with Metropolitan Vitaly (Ustinov), the future First Hierarch of the ROCOR. The acquaintance...

    Toward comparative iconology

One more remark needs to be made. There is a difference which is difficult to capture without knowing some historical facts. In the upper icon, to the right of the royal family, we see four special figures: a woman in a red scarf supporting the Grand Duchess by the elbow, and three men, one of...

    Toward comparative iconology

Nice observations. I absolutely agree with you. What can I say in addition to your observations—just develop a little bit what you say. Indeed, the heavenly part of the upper icon is much more significant than on the bottom one. In addition to the prominent central image of Jesus Christ, we see...

    Toward comparative iconology

Perhaps I scared the community and gave the impression that I was suggesting a professional discussion. Not at all. I myself have no special knowledge on the painting of icons. It's about impressions and observations, differences that are visible to the naked eye. And thinking about what might...

Curzon's note and the question of apostolic succession in the church

Rules have no exceptions only in formal logic, they do have exceptions in life, sciences and faith. Okay, I started scanning your previous messages and found one of those examples: As concerns your first assertion, Mark of Ephesus recognized the heresy of the Patriarch of Constantinople, who...

    Toward comparative iconology

I am posting two icons of the New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia from two different jurisdictions. It would be interesting to collect opinions on what the essence of differences is, what comparative advantages and shortcomings are, and how the differences may reflect their creedal backgrounds.

Curzon's note and the question of apostolic succession in the church

You believe countless Fathers have asserted something, but you provide no examples, and even if you find one or two, I am sure that such examples are so rare that they are exceptions and not a rule. What is really dangerous, is to negate the fundamental law contained in the NT, in searching...

Curzon's note and the question of apostolic succession in the church

So your argument is that the two rules from the New Testament, 1) apostles design elders of the church, 2) the elders of the church design elders of the church, are not exclusive, that is, you assume that there may be other ways of creating "elders" than those described in the NT. You thus...

Curzon's note and the question of apostolic succession in the church

This is false. The relevant instructions contained in the NT (and already cited in this thread) contain the following two points: 1) apostles design elders of the church, 2) the elders of the church design elders of the church. The principle of apostolic succession is the following statement...
