Could someone please translate the text here? I've been trying and failing for a bit here now.

I think.... it says:

БЕЗ СОЛИ - without salt
БЕЗ ХЛІБА - without bread
ПОЛОВИНА ОБІДА - only a half meal is had

... it actually rhymes... in both languages.

My words are in Ukrainian... so you would change my І for an И... and add Ь at the end of БЕЗЬ

Does that sound right? What kind of box is it?

Thank you Liza, I couldn't decipher some of the letters. I was wondering what it is. With that inscription it turns out it's a salt shaker. The silver stamps show it was made in Moscow in 1870.

Liza has got it more or less right. It's Russian in pre-revolutionary orthography, using БЕЗЪ, ХЛѢБА, and ОБѢДА rather than the modern БЕЗ, ХЛЕБА, and ОБЕДА.
