Hi.

I would like to know whether people with physical disabilities are allowed to join the monastic life. Can you give me some information on the matter (e.g. links to official Orthodox teachings)?

Thank you.

I doubt there are official Orthodox teachings, though I’m not sure. You might have some luck asking an actual monastery.

And welcome to the forum! 😊

I suppose it depends on the disability. Like Ainnir wrote, it'd be best to contact a monastery. Each monastery is different; some may be able to accomodate and some may not.

I have a friend who, before entering the Dominican novitiate had to undergo extensive physical exams including having several dental repairs.

It depends on the monastery and the disability. For example, I know there are many monasteries that would be difficult to get around in a wheelchair, but not all of them: Saint Anthony Orthodox Monastery in Arizona is accommodating to people in wheelchairs.
Like Ainnir said, one should contact the monasteries themselves

Was it mandatory?

Yes, it was mandatory to complete before joining the novitiate class.
