After reading an article recently about Red Pine's translations of Cold Mountain's works, as well as a reworking of Kuòān Shīyuǎn's ox-herding commentaries, I've gained a sort of appreciation for Taoist verse. (The Zen Buddhists claim him too, but I'm not interested in the debate or even application of the poetry toward a given philosophy).

Here's one of my favorites:

Thirty years in this world
I wandered ten thousand miles,
By rivers, buried deep in grass,
In borderlands, where red dust flies.
Tasted drugs, still not Immortal,
Read books, wrote histories.
Now I’m back at Cold Mountain,
Head in the stream, cleanse my ears.

I became familiar with this poetry through the works of Gary Snyder.
