Mijn stem

Bij het ruw houten kruis,
heeft mijn stem geklonken
Kruisig Hem!
Daar werd de beker leeggedronken.

Valselijk beschuldigd
stond U daar terecht.
Mijn overtredingen en zonden
hebben Uw vonnis beslecht.

Ik ben mijn eigen weg gegaan.
Wist het allemaal zo goed.
Mijn eigen mening stond voorop,
ik wist hoe het moest.

Totdat ik ging beseffen,
dat ik niet alles weet.
Erkennen, dat ik Iemand nodig heb,
maakte mijn omkering  compleet.

Aan Hem gaf ik mijn leven.
Hou niet langer alles in de hand.
Hij bestuurt mijn levensboot,
brengt mij veilig naar de overkant.

Can only read and understand the language when spoken, with some difficulty.  :(  And I know exactly nil in the way of poetry. But please keep contributing.

My voice

By the rough wooden cross
my voice has sounded
Crucify him!
The cup was drunk there up.

Falsely accused
You stood right there.
My transgressions and sins
Have your verdict settled.

I have gone my own way.
I knew it all so well.
My own opinion was paramount,
I always knew how…

Until I started to realize,
I do not know everything.
Recognition that I need Someone,
Made my reversal complete.

I gave my life to Him.
Keep no longer everything in control.
He rules my life boat
brings me safely across.

Ik ga naar de parochie van de Heilige Nektarios in Eindhoven. Komt u dit bekend voor? Het is een goede parochie voor vele Orthodoxe gelovigen in Nederland.
Ben ook benieuwd aan welke parochie u kerkt.

Groeten in XC,

Beste Daniel,

Christus is opgestaan!

Hopelijk dit jaar, wij gaan onze parochiefeest vieren op die "echte" datum (ipv de Zondag daarnaast).  Dus als u vrij bent op 20 juli, zijn u van hart welcom.

Nee, ek is 'n Amerikaanse.  Ek leer Afrikaans.

Funny story which I will give in English because it is relevant and you speak English better than I do Dutch or Afrikaans   ;).  My friend and I had a South African bus driver once so my friend asked if he was a Boer.  He said, "No.  I'm a truck driver."

No - makes perfect sense to me too (I hope). He's saying he's not a farmer. I'm not at all fluent, but I'm familiar with Plattdeutsch (it was my grandfather's only language until secondary school) and it seems to help me understand a fair bit of both Dutch and Afrikaans - though the spellings are odd. There's no standard orthography for Platt but what would be Bauer in Hochdeutsch is more like Bur in Platt, which sounds very similar to Boer. (When I say Plattdeutsch I'm referring to the dialect spoken in the region close to Bremen - other dialects are available)

Thanks. No I, strangely, have never even thought to look for a Platt version of Wikipedia. I grew up hearing bits it (my mother cursing under her breath to a large degree) but never really was all that interested until the last few years. I'd love to be fluent but unfortunately unless I move the family back there, I don't think I ever will be.

Pretty much outside of Bavarian, Austria, and of course Switzerland real dialect use is dead.

The Standard language has taken over for the most part.

You might enjoy this, although you probably already know about it:

No, Platt is alive and well in my ancestral home - they even have written Platt adverts in the local magazine, alongside Hochdeutsch of course. Of course, it's a tiny town in the sticks about halfway between Bremen and Hannover, so it's probably pretty much a rural holdout, though having said that Radio Bremen definitely still has programmes in Platt as well. My understanding is that there's a reasonably big movement to revive the language in Niedersachsen, Bremen and Hamburg as well.

Someone found the Easter Egg.

William do you also have an orthonorm.txt file?
A what?
Εen tekstbestandje speciaal voor orthonorm, denk ik. Een dossier, misschien? Willem, hier spreken we Nederlands.
I don't spreken "Nederlands".
"Ik spreek geen Nederlands" is the only sentence in Dutch you should know when you come across someone from the Netherlands. I even voicerecorded it so that you could practice your pronunciation  :D
Ik spreek geen Nederlands. But I can try.
