What is your opinion about George MacDonald and his theology? He criticized the doctrine of penal substitution. I've started reading some of his works, but I have yet to find out what his views are about the reason why Jesus had to suffer, die and resurrect. Is anyone here familiar with MacDonald's works? Share your thoughts on the matter.

Never heard of him.
Even though the two never met, C.S. Lewish called MacDonald his "mentor" in the sense that MacDonald's works influenced Lewis' theology. You probably heard of C.S. Lewis. Even Orthodoxy praise some of his books despite him being a Protestant.

I haven't heard of MacDonald, either. I can't promise I'll be able to read the article and respond any time soon.
What are your thoughts on the matter? 😊

I read some of his fiction decades ago and loved his work. I never got into his theological works.

MacDonald's fiction influenced dozens of authors, essentially setting in motion the transition between the folk/fairy tale and what we call today fantasy literature. I have no idea about his theological influence, though. Does Lewis actually say somewhere that McDonald's theology influenced his own?
