I currently live in Castle Shannon PA which is south of Pittsburgh. There's a Serbian parish (13 minutes away) and a Greek parish (15 minutes away) that are closest to me. I want to avoid ethnic parishes cause I'm not Serb nor Greek, and the closest Antiochian one is about 20 minutes away. I've had a bad experience with a Greek parish one time so I'm hesitant on checking it out.

Maybe someone who lives in this area can help me with another issue, preferably I'd like to go to a parish that has believers in the age group of 20s and late 20s/early 30s. I know the demographics where I'm at now skew towards 60s and up, but it would help considerably in consistently showing up to church.

Thanks for the help.

Ok thanks, maybe I'll still check it out. I'm not going to a parish until sometime in the summer.

How nice to have 3 parishes within 20 minutes. Just curious, why do you plan to wait so long before visiting?

My Greek Priest is from Serbia and is a really nice guy.  You should just give them both a chance, who knows?

I can't attend a parish in good faith right now, that's all I can say. Sorry don't mean to be curt.

Lord take my burdens and give me rest...

Thank you Liza,

St. Vladimir Ukrainian Orthodox Church  73 South 18th Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15203 (which isn't on your list) closest to me. I could get there in 30 minutes using public transportation.

There is a Ukrainian parish in Carnegie which coincidentally is right next to an OCA parish. You could hit both coffee hours in one week!  :p

Actually, that would be:
St. Vladimir Parish
1810 Sidney Street
Pittsburgh, PA 15203
Tel: (412) 322-8496
Pastor: Rev. John Haluszczak

I know Fr. John.  In fact, he and I are on the same "Strategic Committee"...which in fact, meets tonight!  So, I will be speaking with him in a few hours!  :D

I also know the Deacon who serves there.

All very nice people.

Small world.

Are you talking about the Antiochian parish in Scott Twp?  Fr. Jason is great.  I would at least give them a try.

Yeah St. George. I was looking on Google Maps and wondered where the parking lot is.

20 minutes isn't bad and gives me an excuse to drive my car longer (since I don't use it during the work week).

Not all "Greek" parishes are the same.  Go to all 3 and see which one fits the best.  Simple as that.

Seriously, just visit the nearest parishes first. The stereotypes only go so far. If you get a bad vibe you don't have to go back. Also, waiting till you're sure about the faith before visiting might be a backwards way of doing it. Thinking about it in an abstract/ isolated way might just confuse you more.

Does it have to involve public transit? I've only visited ~4 parishes in the city (3 OCA, 1 AOA), but none that I'd mention with any strong opinions. Other than those four, the closest would be about 35 miles away, but it'd be a strongly recommended one. You could probably even wear your robes there.*

*This is probably not true

Its would be good to check them both out, but Greek and Serbian parishes have a tendency toward being (vvvery) ethnic. So keep that in mind. It's kind of the curse of the Orthodox Church in North America.
Antiochian churches usually speak english in the liturgy, but some can be ethnic as well.
Go check them out, you may be surprised! :D

....the only other alternative being, Jesus Prayer rope constantly in one hand during liturgy to ward off falling asleep, then leaving as quickly as possible after you scope out the place. Oh - and not to mention, telling your best buds you missed back at another parish how unenjoyable your other visit was, and why  ;D
