Yesterday the 44 year old Formula One racing driver while out skiing with his son off piste in the French Alps fell and struck his head against a rock. Despite wearing a helmet and being initially conscious his condition merited helicopter evacuation from a local hospital to the regional hospital at Grenoble.
Today a spokesman for the hospital, Dr Payen, says he was critically injured on admission with raised intra-cranial pressure, bi-lateral lesions and contusions. Immediately neurosurgeons carried out emergency surgery. He remains in a critical state and medics would not be drawn on a prognosis, saying only that had he not worn a helmet he would already be dead.
Schumacher as well as being arguably the most successful F1 driver is a long standing and very competent skier.
