Fact:

It is believed that Shakespeare was 46 around the time that the King James Version of the Bible was written. In Psalms 46, the 46th word from the first word is shake and the 46th word from the last word is spear.

Fact:
Chortle was a word coined by Lewis Carroll in Through the looking glass in 1872. "'O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!' He chortled in his joy." Perhaps Lewis Carroll would chortle a bit himself to find that people are still using the word chortle, which he coined in Through the Looking-Glass, published in 1872. In any case, Carroll had constructed his word well, combining the words chuckle and snort. This type of word is called a blend or a portmanteau word. In Through the Looking-Glass Humpty Dumpty uses portmanteau to describe the word slithy, saying, "It's like a portmanteau—there are two meanings packed up into one word" (the meanings being "lithe" and "slimy").

Fact:

The average human emits approximately 95 watts of energy as heat in the form of infrared light. A standard 100 watt incandescent light bulb emits only about 5% of its energy as visible light, the rest is given off as heat in the form of infrared light. This means the average human produces the same amount of heat as a 100 watt light bulb.

Fact:

If you start at the North Pole and walk due south along the Prime Meridian to the equator, turn 90 degrees and walk one quarter around the globe and then turn 90 degrees to the North and walk to the North Pole - you have just created a triangle with 3 right angles!!!

Fact:

Between 50 billion and 70 billion cells die each day due to apoptosis(a genetically determined process of cell self-destruction) in the average human adult. In a year, this amounts to the proliferation and subsequent destruction of a mass of cells equal to an individual's body weight.

Hooray! I've started a posting frenzy!

Stupid laws are facts too!

Fact:

In archaeology and anthropology the term excarnation refers to the burial practice adopted by some societies of removing the flesh of the dead, leaving only the bones. This may be done through natural means, involving leaving a body exposed for animals to scavenge, or it may be purposefully undertaken by butchering the corpse by hand. In the middle ages, excarnation was practiced by European cultures as a way of preserving the bones when the deceased was of high status, or had died some distance from home. One notable example of a person who underwent excarnation following death was Christopher Columbus.

In Pennsylvania:

Any motorist driving along a country road at night must stop every mile and send up a rocket signal, wait 10 minutes for the road to be cleared of livestock, and continue.

Any motorist who sights a team of horses coming toward him must pull well off the road, cover his car with a blanket or canvas that blends with the countryside, and let the horses pass.

Fact:

Alcohol is absorbed directly through the stomach, and in the process irritates the cells that line the organ. Alcohol also promotes secretion of additional hydrochloric acid in the stomach, eventually causing the nerves to send a message to the brain that the stomach's contents are hurting the body. The brain responds by telling the stomach to expel its contents by vomiting.

Fact:

Typically, muscular "strength" refers to the ability to exert a force on an external object. By this definition, the jaw muscle is the strongest. The 1992 Guinness Book of Records records the highest bite strength of 4337 N (975 lbf) for 2 seconds. What distinguishes the jaw muscle is not anything special about the muscle itself, but its advantage in working against a much shorter lever arm than other muscles. If "strength" refers to the force exerted by the muscle itself, the strongest muscle of the body is usually said to be the quadriceps femoris or the gluteus maximus. The unexplained statement that "the tongue is the strongest muscle in the body" appears frequently in lists of surprising facts, but it is difficult to find any definition of "strength" that would make this statement true. Note that the tongue consists of sixteen muscles, not one.

Fact:

Human fingers do not contain any muscles other than the small muscles attached to each hair follicle, which contract to make the hairs stand on end, causing goose bumps. The muscles that move the finger joints are in the palm and forearm. The long tendons that deliver motion from the forearm muscles may be observed to move underneath the skin at the wrist and on the back of the hand.

Fact:

Despite their location, the valves of the human heart receive no blood supply of their own. Because of this, they also have no defense against bacterial infection, as white blood cells can't enter the tissue.

Fact:

Some Amish are afflicted by genetic disorders, including dwarfism, and are also distinguished by the highest incidence of twinning in a known human population, various metabolic disorders and unusual distribution of blood-types. Since almost all of the current Amish descend primarily from about 200 founders in the 18th century, some genetic disorders from a degree of in-breeding exist in more isolated districts. However, Amish do not represent a single closed community, but rather a collection of different genetically closed communities. Some of these disorders are quite rare, or even unique, and serious enough that they increase the mortality rate among Amish children.

Fact:

The LD50 (the median lethal dosage amount that will kill 50% of the test subjects) for Vitamin C using rats as test subjects is 11.9 grams per kilogram of body weight. For a 150 pound human this would require consuming 1.785 pounds of pure Vitamin C in one sitting.

Fact:

Bile acids, one of the key components of bile, are produced by the liver and are used by the body to emulsify fat in the intestines. They are produced in the liver by the oxidation of cholesterol, and are stored in the gallbladder until the stomach releases its partially digested food. Synthesis of bile acids is a major consumer of cholesterol. The average body synthesizes about 800 mg of cholesterol per day and about half of that is used for bile acid synthesis. In total about 20-30 grams of bile acids are secreted into the intestine daily. About 90% the excreted bile acids are later reabsorbed further down the intestines to be reused.

Fact:

Maple Syrup Urine Disease is a genetic disorder characterized by an infant with sweet-smelling urine with an odor similar to that of maple syrup. Infants with this disease seem healthy at birth but if left untreated suffer severe brain damage and eventually die. Maple Syrup Urine Disease is caused by a deficiency of a certain metabolic enzyme. The deficiency leads to a toxic buildup of branched-chain amino acids (leucine, isoleucine, and valine) in the blood and urine.

I guess that means you're o.k. and I need work!
Hehe! Actually, I teach computer applications at a hospital, but it's been suggested to me that I should pursue a career in medicine. I haven't quite decided on that yet. :D  And stranger than that, I hold a bachelor's degree in English, and have completed about 2/3 of a master's degree in Education. So much for working in my degree field!  ;D

Fact:

On Dec. 17, 1997, an episode of "Pokemon" was aired on Japanese television that induced seizures in hundreds of people throughout the country of Japan. The ages of those affected ranged from 3 to 58 years old. Ironically, the TV news reports played the perpetrating scene excerpt of flashing red lights, causing even more people to be afflicted with epileptic-type symptoms, in case they had missed the first one.

Fact:

To make Pop Rocks, the hot sugar mixture is allowed to mix with carbon dioxide gas at about 600psi. The carbon dioxide gas forms tiny, 600psi bubbles in the candy. When you put the candy in your mouth, it melts and releases the bubbles. What you are hearing and feeling is the 600psi carbon dioxide gas being released from each bubble.
