Very true...

I didn't know that sake doesn't do well on travel...

Maybe that is more of a reason to go with a fine Brandy or Whiskey...
Unless there's going to be sushi as well, I'd tend to agree, for one thing Brandy and Whiskey have a higher percentage of alcohol...and I've alwasy been one for efficience...but Sake, especially warm, accompanies sushi quite nicely.

Sushi? Uggh! GiC, you should know that the only thing that 'accompanies sushi quite nicely' is an airline vomit bag.

And this is from a former Louisianan, so I'm used to eating things other people would consider to be fishbait... ;)

Yes, I'm not a fan of the sushi either... the first time I went to a sushi place, I almsot got sick (maybe that's because my stomach doesn't like fish w/ backbone anymore, no?) and the second time I was the only one to get my foor teryaki!

Not all sushi is from fish with backbones, you can get sushi with crab, softshell crab, shrimp, sweet shrimp, tofu, just seaweed, cucumber, squid, octopus, scallops, clams, egg, salmon roe, smelt roe, and my personal favourite...sea urchin. All of these types of sushi will go quite nicely with sake.

Oh, it travels much better now, what with bottling and all.  But on a ship that would take months to get to Europe and sake was stored in barrels that are at least partially made of rice straw (I've never had a chance to dissect a sake barrel) it wasn't something that was going to keep.  Wines in the Middle Ages/Renaissance had the same problem, but at least the distances were shorter.

Some sake is best warm and some is best cold.  Not all sake is the same.

It may be a sign of the Apocolypse, but liking sushi/sashimi is another thing that I can agree with GiC on.

Cleveland = "foor teriyaki"?  Intriguing name... must be a local speciality.  ;D

(I know it's a type.... at least I hope it is.)

And for Chris and Cleveland I cite the old Irish proverb

"If we all liked the same thing, there wouldn't be enough to go around."

GiC: true, there are other types of sushi... but unlike beef, I like my fish cooked... meanwhile, I prefer my steaks almost mooing...
Ebor: I meant to say "food teryaki"...

you guys can have your sushi... I'll have my dinner of Tsingtao instead  ;)

I have noticed this disturbing trend as well, and rest assured I'm just as uncomfortable with it as you are. ;)

Oh well, if the apocalypse is coming, at least we have enough booze in this thread to dull the pain...
