Then again maybe I'm too much of a modernist to care much about them, except certain works like the Aeneid.
I'm more interested in what is going on in the now and in the future.
Maybe you can convince me to take a second look...well I'm going to have to ready the Odyssey again before reading Ulysses...
Well I need to learn Greek, because you know what better Orthodox apologetics can you get by busting out the words in Greek and transliterating them for Protestants in debating with them? ;DCyrillic said:The best philosophers, poets, historians, theologians, Church Fathers and orators spoke or wrote in either Greek or Latin. Oh, but I'm going to do a double study. I'm taking History as well.

No, I wasn't trying to be ironic. I merely admitted I don't have what it takes to fully grasp what Zizek is joking about all the time. I only presume to know enough so I can tell that he is - for the most part - just joking. The only thing that might redeem him is if he doesn't take himself too seriously as a philosopher either. I think he doesn't.Achronos said:LOL is that a good thing, or was that a jab at orthonorm?
You don't have to answer if its personal, but why did you drop out of philosophy? Why classics?
Yeah I hear you about translation, and I think that extends to major literary works as well. orthonorm recommended me a book on Heidegger a year or so ago, and I'm sure it would be better to read him in the original German instead of trying to translate his thought.Romaios said:No, I wasn't trying to be ironic. As for my studies, one thing led to the other - in the end, I guess I found philology a more worthwhile and enjoyable pursuit for myself. Much philosophy is not really intelligible in translation. You can't go far without at least a working knowledge of Greek and German.
Creative? Are you an artist?Achronos said:But my first love has always been something in the creative field, and I would pursue it if the market wasn't so oversatured with folks looking for work in that area.
Put "artist" in quotes, haha. But yeah, that's what I love to do and I'm fairly decent at it. I think college for a lot of art hopefuls was a true reality check if they were actually good at it or not.Cyrillic said:Creative? Aww, no need to be all pessimistic. From your posts its quite clear that you're creative and eccentric enough to be a good artistAchronos said:Put "artist" in quotes, haha. I have the imagination and the talent, I just need to sharpen up my skills.
Places like deviantart can sometimes be discouraging for me because you'll come across a lot of folks that are so good at what they can do, and it seems like I will never get there.
And then you have people who just produce mountains of crap all day...
Ah yes. Half of my friends think they're artists and expert drawers. I know those folks ;DAchronos said:I don't have a deviantart. I think its the scum of the art world IMHO.olice:
I sometimes put some work on Facebook...
It's not so much pessimistic as I want to be as realistic as I can with what I can do. Too many people that come into Drawing 1 classes think they are so great and the next big thing, only to realize they were never that good to begin with. You should see how many of those folks actually show up to Drawing 2 and beyond, not many.
It's not bad to be a perfectionist. I think it's a very good thing for an artist. Even if you don't pick up an art study you should really try to get better and follow your dreams. Many great artists didn't went to art school. Who knows, perhaps in a hundred years an authentic "Achronos" will sell for millions of dollars.Achronos said:Maybe I need to stop selling myself short, I don't know. All I know is I want to be the best at whatever is I am doing, I hate being so competitive with other people, but I am only satisifed if I can do things better than others.
And ontop of that, I'm a perfectionist. AKA throwing away an entire sketchbook until I get it exactly the way I want it.
What do you call a kid who is verbally harrasing the other and making fun of them all the time?orthonorm said:I've been preaching its near destruction for a while. Anytime I hear some say, "all you need to do is stick up to a bully", I know they've never met a true bully.

I'm way too ignorant of Lacan especially, to dare voice a very strong opinion on him.
I'm not all that familiar with Freud either. Of course orthodox Marxism tended to dismiss him as another decadent bourgeois ideologue. now not that I adhere to Marxist orthodoxy in principle. or any other orthodoxies. just haven't been much interested in him.Achronos said:Well you probably know some stuff on Freud right? I didn't realize Zizek was joking most of the time. I saw his explanation on markets and capitalism on youtube and actually agreed with him.

School bullying ain't got diddly on workplace bullying.
The word bullying became entirely vacuous.
There was thread somewhere about this. All I know I lived twice in my life where it was near hell to be a kid.
I remedied the first bullying around age eight or so with a brick repeatedly to someone's head. (Kids were holding my younger brother down try to take out his stitches. And we were the wrong color.)
Then when I had to relocate to a place of my own color. It required a more blunt instrument and much less blunt instrument and a few trips to court and what passed for jail / juvenile confinement.
In both cases, the bullies only stopped cause I had less to lose and was willing to permanently alter their lives. Where I live now, there are people I would do anything not to get mixed with as they have way less than I ever did. Nothing short of killing them would stop their bullying. For better or worse, I still can carry that ugliness and they assume I have almost as less to lose as they do.
I could eat alive every human I work with. I can't imagine what anyone could possibly do which would amount to bullying. And I've been threatened with termination for the most silly of reasons.
It was nothing like having kids hit you with baseball bats who are about twice your size as a kid.
Thanks, I needed the guffaw today.![]()

If it is just base human greed and malice, that's all it is and everyone does it.
You've never lived in a world where you were lorded over by another or did the same to another on threat of loss of life and limb.
Threat of losing a posh job? Meh.

Oh and I wouldn't expect a long-drawn out breakup thread again in a year, I hope. I've learned a few things from last time.

We worked together at my current company a year and a half ago, but she was dating some other guy. She hit me up on Facebook and started talking.
I wasn't really interested in dating again for awhile, but don't want to pass up this opportunity, eventhough I normally have a rule against dating women who have a kid(s).
Now about this whole atheist/Orthodoxy thing, haven't figured that out yet. I'm not at all looking for anything serious right now, just want to have some fun. Oh and don't worry guys, she isn't the next Madalyn O'Hair nor does she look anything like her (and really thank God for that). She's firm in what she believes, but I wouldn't say dogmatic.
