Really really cool (but kinda distressing) news

I've been pretty much away from the forum for a long while, since my lack of free time led me to restrict my leisure options, but here are some news...

I'm gonna be a father. A real one. My girlfriend Maria Carolina, for whom I ask your prayers, is pregnant. We plan on marrying as soon as we can live together full-time, or at least as soon as the idea sounds like more than mere religious zeal to our families.

The kid will definitely be called Seraphim (a name we both loved even before meeting each other, specially me) if it's a boy, but we're yet to settle on a girl name. My girlfriend unfortunately hates my suggestion Helena, while I actually like her suggestion Marcella, but in a "we asked for cheese pizza, but pepperoni is fine" way.

So this is a thread for you guys to hear some good news, congratulate me for the accomplishment of reproduction, rebuke my fornication (so much for leisure options), give me father and husband tips, and suggest nice-sounding Orthodox girl names.

I will say that while babies are always a blessing, doing things in reverse or even just close together often makes two difficult transitions doubly so. It will likely take extra prayer, extra mutual respect, and extra work to get both started off with a good foundation (unless you’ve done a lot of relationship groundwork already). But it’s absolutely possible, and babies and weddings are both joyous occasions, so I’m so happy for you both and pray God blesses y’all!

That said, brace yourself for learning about the many facets of baby poop.

Catharina was one of my first suggestions, but my girlfriend didn't really like it. Just cut Dorotheia, too.

You're right! Our relationship was a two-and-a-half-year quagmire (which even included us having brief but serious relationships with other people) before we decided to stick together once and for all and make it official March this year. We still need some work, but we're both very rational people who love each other, so we always work it out. We probably have far more fights than the average couple, but we have probably gone to sleep mad at each other three or four times this entire year. We're in a good path.

It's not really a foreign-sounding name here. For some weird reason, Brazilians love giving their kids Russian names. Iuri/Yuri and Igor are particularly widespread. Vladimir, Kátia/Cátia, Vânia (for women, lol), Olga, Sasha/Sacha, Bóris, Andrei, Tatiana, Tânia, Ivã/Ivan, Lara, Raíssa and Nikolai are also all very common, off the top of my head. Serguei used to be common too, but nowadays it sounds exactly like "being gay", so it's a no-go, unless parents really want their kid to develop a thick skin.

I'm not sure if "Valentina" came straight from Latin or through Russian into the Portuguese language, but it was probably from Russian, and nowadays it's such a common baby name that it's become slang for the daughters of irresponsible young moms.

Really, if I was to name a daughter today, I would name her Maria/ Mary after our most Holy Theotokos. With each calling of her name the prayers of Our Lady sing out for such a one. With constant reminders that one was named after Theotokos, a child will direct their attention to study who they were named after.

True story: I wanted to name our 2cnd born Elizabeth, mother of John the Baptist- the Forerunner. Dad agreed to Elizabeth. A decade later, when discussion came up, Dad said, "she's named after the Queen of England" ok. Yeah. Wow. I quickly tried to remind child that the Queen was named after the mother of Forerunner. But she wasn't listening. "A queen you say?"

What was the series, by the way? 3%? The Mechanism? I don't really think we've learned how to make good series yet, as a national industry. Which is a shame, since I love good series. They just don't do justice to the quality of our cinema. I highly recommend Estômago, which is on Netflix. There are other high-quality Brazilian films, like City of God, Elite Squad, Elite Squad 2 (a rare case of a sequel that does justice to the original film), Black God White Devil, A Dog's Will and Bacurau, but all of these have strongly Brazilian-specific themes, while Estômago is more universal. The Man Who Copied and Drained are also pretty universal. I think you'd also like Bacurau, if I reckon your taste correctly from previous posts. It's a very unique mix between hunger cinema (which is a blend between Western, drama and Brazilian literature, like Black God White Devil), weird fiction and slasher horror. Highly appraised.

I had the same feeling. The main character in Estômago is played by a younger version of the same actor who played the main antagonist in 3%, by the way. Great acting. He managed to create a very specific kind of disturbing that the script required.
