The death of any human being always saddens me. I shall never rejoice in the death of another, regardless of how evil or unjust they may be.
Robert Mugabe was a controversial figure, to say the least. He will be remembered by many as a revolutionary figure who led Zimbabwe to independence from British colonial rule. But others will remember him for harboring the murderous Mengistu, who orchestrated the violent, communist driven overthrow of the Ethiopian Orthodox monarchy.
Some will remember Mugabe for his “revolutionary land reform," whereby he forcibly removed white farmers in order to restore the land to “the people.” But others will remember Mugabe as a self-aggrandizing politician whose “land reform” policies ultimately resulted in Zimbabwe’s economic collapse that led to poverty and starvation for the masses.
In the final analysis, Robert Mugabe was typical of so many pseudo-revolutionaries: he initially fought a just struggle for liberation only to become another political oppressor himself.
Let us pray for his departed soul: “Lord have mercy.” +++
