Hiermonk Alexei (formerly Fr. Paisius Altschul) of the Serbian Archdiocese of the Midwest, under the guidance of Bishop Longin, is founding a men's skete in the Kansas City region. Fr. Alexei received the blessing of Bishop Longin to spend nearly a year on Mt. Athos, and returned with the purpose of founding a men's monastery in Kansas City.
They are coming close to securing an 80 acre piece of property outside of Cameron, MO, which is about 50 miles away from the center of Kansas City, and 30 miles from the closest suburbs.
The property is 80 acres, 65 being forested. It has 7 existing buildings in wonderful condition, already furnished.
They are receiving 80% funding through a bank loan, and are halfway to acquiring the money needed for their down payment. They hope to close by the end of September, and begin monastic functions quickly thereafter.
The St. Xenia Sisterhood is also being transferred from downtown Kansas City to this piece of property. The two monastic communities will co-exist on the property, but will eventually remain separate communities, sharing feast days and other functions.
This will be the only men's monastic community within almost 400 miles, the only one in Missouri, and the closest to Kansas, Iowa, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Nebraska. If or when St. Xenia's grows into a full monastic community, it will be the third women's monastery in Missouri.
Here is their YouTube video with Fr. Alexei walking us through the property & buildings, outlining their plans: http://youtu.be/4j_92OJoc6A
Here is the official website for the skete with more information on the monastery and for donations: http://www.archangelmichaelskete.org/
