A depiction of the appearance of the Okovetsk-Rzhevsk Icon of the Theotokos, the God-Child, and St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, upon a tree on a Russian riverbank in 1539. Fastened to another tree nearby was a large iron cross, or perhaps, as depicted here, an icon of the Cross instead. I don't imagine the wilderness in the Tver' region was so bare and rocky, however.
The rocks and the treets in shape of palms indicates to correlation with the Holy Land, maybe it's a symbolical meaning?..

I can't remember an icon of Christ, Theotokos, and St. Nicholas like that.

Sandals were not the only footwear in ancient times.

I have no idea why the shoes stood out to me. Weird. Maybe the ballet slippers. Maybe because I'm so used to seeing the bare foot on the earth.

I saw an icon where the person has the head of a horse? What's the story behind that?

St Christopher and it is a dog head, because barbarians are dog headed.

It is, but why in such way? As in icons if something apperas, e.g an attribue it has a meaning..
It seems the equivalent of the full body icons where a Saint is standing on green ground and blank background like those found on wall frescoes. If there is a different meaning, I would also like to know.

Palms are a symbol of martyrdom.
Yes, but why under his feet? Not kidding, as at least me I see in my head a martyr keeping the palm in his hands, not being under his feet, as it could mean condemnation?...

Stylistic choice. How could it mean condemnation?

I guess I saw it more like Palm Sunday. The branches were strewn on the path as well as waved.
Yes, but in such case somebody puting the branches is missing. Or that those rbanches had been already given unto the feet. Maybe thinking too much, but for this reason I've put this icon in this section, as I've never before seen something like this ;)
