I just read about this today in the student newspaper... This kid was ALWAYS on campus doing stuff for people. He always had a smile on his face and was always very helpful. I just can't believe he's dead. He was only 19.

Student Government VP Darnell McNeil Killed in Newark Gun Incident

RVCC [Raritan Valley Community College] student Darnell McNeil, 19, was shot and killed in Newark on Superbowl Sunday, Feb. 7.

According to police, Darnell tried to enter Knockouts Go-Go Lounge on Sanford Avenue at about 10:45 p.m. but was turned away because of lack of proper ID.  Darnell is said to have returned to the bar about 15 minutes later with a gun and allegedly fired into the crowd, wounding an off-duty sheriff’s officer. The officer then chased McNeil outside and shot him with his service revolver. McNeil was pronounced dead at 11:26 p.m. at Newark's University Hospital.

An Essex County Prosecutor’s Office investigation is under way.

McNeil’s funeral service was held at Christian Pentecostal Church of Christ in Irvington on Feb. 15. About 50 people from the RVCC community attended.

McNeil was vice president of the Student Government Association and was involved in a lot of student activities here including, Phi Theta Kappa. He received many scholarships for his academic achievements and had been expected to graduate in May with a dual major in criminal justice and mathematics.

What a sad ending to what appeared to be such a "promising" life.

Lord, have mercy!
