Wonderful news! Finally!
The 3 Christian communities (Greek Orthodox, Franciscan (Roman Catholic), and Armenian Apostolic) have agreed to the restoration of the aedicule that houses the tomb of Our Savior.

Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem:

Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land: http://www.custodia.org/default.asp?id=779&id_n=30167

What is amazing to read is that the aedicule will be dismantled and then reassembled.

It's not clear whether the Coptic Orthodox Church had a say in the matter considering the Copts have a chapel at the back of the aedicule.

Restoration is expected to last at least eight months, to be completed by early 2017.

What is there to restore exactly?  Hundreds and sometimes thousands of people have visited the tomb daily, and it doesn't seem like there are any issues there.

The aedicule is in danger of collapsing, which is why steel beams were placed around it in 1947.

Please click the link above from the Franciscan Custody. It gives an explanation as well as a slideshow that shows areas in the aedicule which are in need of repair.

A complete restoration of the aedicule will mean the removal of those steel beams. I'm looking forward to that.

Back in 2001, PBS aired "Tomb of Christ" (from the "Secrets of the Dead" series) which included the first ever major survey of the tomb.

Excerpts from the program can be found at the following link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FClYIzNhKKQ (beginning at minute 12:09)

It's worth watching for the segment showing how the four aedicules were built one on top of the other over the centuries.

I'm sure the upcoming dismantling and restoration of the current aedicule will be filmed for a future documentary.

“His Majesty King Abdullah II has issued a Royal Benefaction (makruma) to provide for the restoration of Jesus’ Tomb in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, at His Majesty’s personal expense.” The news was announced by Jordanian press agency Petra, which says that the Hashemite Court sent an official letter to the Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem, Theophilos III.
